Staatstheater Stuttgart is the world’s third-largest theatre to combine three different disciplines. With ballet, opera and theatre, it is one of Germany’s most renowned theatres and is also well known far beyond Baden-Württemberg’s borders.
But the independent culture and performing arts scene is also alive and well in the region. Stuttgarter Freie Tanz- und Theaterschaffende (Stuttgart’s independent dance and theatre performers) have their own name, “Teilchenbeschleuniger” (particle accelerators), and give the public an overview of the artists, ensembles and companies as well as their current events.
Württembergische Landesbühne Esslingen is one of Germany’s first regional state theatres and nowadays is a guest at performance locations both within and beyond Baden-Württemberg. Stuttgart’s Theaterhaus has also helped the city gain an excellent reputation for theatre and culture. Comedies and cabaret are to be found on the floating Theaterschiff dinner theatre, while audiences at Friedrichsbau Varieté are transported into another world night after night with performances by artists and acrobats taking place every evening.
All kinds of culture and performing arts are very popular in the Stuttgart Region. More than 35,000 people avail of the offering from Kulturgemeinschaft Stuttgart with its reasonably priced subscriptions. This makes the association the biggest visitor organisation in Germany and an established institution in the region.
