The Stuttgart three-division house can best be described with superlatives. It is one of the largest multi-divisional house in the world and all three areas – opera, theatre and ballet – are regularly awarded major prizes.

But also the independent scene of culture and performing arts is very active in the region. Stuttgart’s independent dance and theatre professionals present themselves, among others, with the Produktionszentrum Tanz + Performance e.V. and thus give the audience an overview of the artists, ensembles and companies as well as their current events.

The Württembergische Landesbühne Esslingen is one of the first state theatres in Germany and today performs in venues in and outside of Baden-Württemberg. The Theaterhaus also helps the region to gain an excellent reputation as a stage and cultural location. Comedies and cabaret can be found on the floating cultural stage of the Theatre Ship.

An indication of the activity and liveliness of the local art scene are its diverse facilities. From the State Gallery and the Art Museum in the city centre to the Nagel Art Auction House, with privately owned galleries, publicly run museums and art businesses of all kinds, the Stuttgart Region offers an optimal infrastructure and environment for art lovers.

But what would an art market be without its artists? Stuttgart is home to the Württembergischer Kunstverein, with its numerous members, almost half of whom are artists. And there are also numerous artists represented in the oldest artists‘ association in Germany, which is based here.

The region does not need to worry about the next generation of artists: many renowned training institutions such as the Akademie Schloss Solitude, the State Academy of Fine Arts or the Academy of Fine Arts Nürtingen represent institutions with a wide range of art disciplines for young artists.
